When the Tokyo Marathon 2018 became oversubscribed, the race’s official American Express, came up with a fun and innovative way to allow the greater public to participate. Partnering with Ogilvy Tokyo, they built a 3D digital replica of the race’s route and avatar runners. “Finger Marathon” was presented at the Tokyo Marathon Expo 2018 the weekend of the race. Visitors were able to sign up for an American Express card, which gave them immediate access to “run” in the virtual race using their fingers. American Express made hundreds of dreams come true and increased new membership recruitment 143% from the previous year.
