Incarcerated Mothers Tell their Stories in Emotional IWD Campaign by Not Beyond Redemption
Mar. 07, 2023
Not Beyond Redemption (NBR) is a charity that provides free family legal advice and representation to mothers in prison - with a focus on re-establishing access and relationships between mothers and their children, which is so often lost when they are sentenced.
In celebration of International Women’s Day, The Edge have partnered with NBR (pro bono) to create a short film - a platform for two women to tell their stories and the critical role NBR has, and continues to have, in their lives.
Talking directly to camera, one woman explains how she had mentally prepared herself to never see her child again with another stating that without the support and intervention of NBR she would have no contact with her daughter.
Interspersed with a number of hard-hitting facts including that 95% of children have to leave the family home if their mother goes into prison - the film shines a light on a desperate situation many of us know very little about and is a call to action for a remarkable charity that needs help and support to continue its critical work.
With a long-term aim to have a legal clinic in every women’s prison throughout England – NBR desperately needs lawyers to offer their expertise and time pro bono. They are in search of more law firms across the country to partner with, who can provide NBR with volunteers to attend the prison clinics and take on the cases, and barristers who are willing to represent their clients in Court.
One woman in the film describes NBR as ‘a powerhouse - and for all the right reasons’. And with 17,000 children who are separated from their mothers due to incarceration each year - NBR is a powerhouse charity that exists because of brilliant people donating both their talent and time.
