600+ Shows and Over 60 Million Tickets Sold: SpotCo Celebrates 30 Years of Building Iconic Broadway Brands
Oct. 28, 2026
Few agencies have left as indelible a mark on Broadway as SpotCo, whose history includes landmark campaigns for Rent, Chicago, Hamilton, and Avenue Q as well as recent hits Hadestown, Stereophonic, and Paranormal Activity. As SpotCo enters its 30th year, the agency celebrates three decades of defining arts and culture marketing while driving the next wave of industry innovation.
Founded by Drew Hodges alongside Brian Berk, Jim Edwards and Tom Greenwald, SpotCo began as Spot Design: an entertainment design firm responsible for the groundbreaking branding for the original Broadway production of Rent. That show went on to become one of the longest-running shows on Broadway, grossing over $280 million and setting a standard that forever changed how modern shows were conceptualized and promoted. The same passion and spirit of innovation remains at the core of SpotCo, now a full-service agency led by Managing Director, Chief Client Officer, Stephen Sosnowski and Managing Director, Chief Creative Officer Callie Goff.
Goff said:
“Shows like Rent don’t just represent seminal moments in Broadway history, they put SpotCo on the map. It allowed the industry to see us as not just a design shop, but a fully-integrated marketing agency with the creative innovation and strategic acumen to nurture decade-long hits. And over 30 years, it's a legacy that we’ve worked hard to honor, even as the arts and culture sector has grown and evolved into new and exciting areas.”
As other shows in the early 2000s relied on traditional TV advertising, SpotCo was beginning to experiment with outside-the-box approaches, including viral social media and OOH stunts for Tony-winning sensation Avenue Q. Then, after the pandemic shut down Broadway, SpotCo was the first to welcome audiences back, both with the reopening of Hadestown as well as an enormous street party celebrating the reopening of Pass Over. And as TikTok and Instagram began to dominate culture, SpotCo led the way with an integrated campaign for Stereophonic, the most Tony-nominated play of all time, designed to earn attention in the social media age.
Across countless beloved shows including Beetlejuice, Book of Mormon, Little Shop of Horrors and others, SpotCo has represented 28 Tony Award®-winners for Best Plays and Musicals and sold over 60 million tickets along the way. But for the agency’s team, their success is not measured in accolades, but in their ability to introduce new audiences to an artform they truly love.
Sosnowski explained:
"Influencing a youngster to experience live theater, especially if it's their first time, is the real reason why we do what we do. We want Broadway to feel like a home for everything and for everyone. Over 30 years, the industry has seen some changes and challenges. But Broadway isn't going anywhere and neither is SpotCo. In a world increasingly filled with noise and distractions, live experiences matter more than ever. That intangible magic that happens between performer and audience is something that can't be replicated. It's a fully lived experience that will always be essential. And we look forward to getting people in the doors for generations to come.”
