Colossus Gives Boston Lyric Opera a Dramatic New Look for its 50th Anniversary

Boston Lyric Opera has unveiled a new visual identity from independent creative agency Colossus as the cultural institution celebrates its 50th anniversary season.
Launched May 1, the identity will appear across print, digital, experiential and other brand touchpoints, reaching audiences primarily in Boston alongside the opera company’s broader national following. Colossus was commissioned for the project in January 2026.
Founded in 1976, Boston Lyric Opera has spent five decades bringing one of the world’s oldest theatrical traditions to New England audiences, with a modern twist. The anniversary gave the company an opportunity to sharpen its visual language for a contemporary era while building an identity sturdy enough to stretch across future seasons, platforms and productions.
Colossus began by digging into the narrative material of BLO’s 50th season, including The Marriage of Figaro, A Streetcar Named Desire and William Tell. Lust, betrayal, tragedy, triumph, romance and existential philosophy supplied the raw ingredients. From there, the agency looked toward a modern storytelling form that chews on many of the same obsessions, contemporary cinema.

Opera and film may sit in different seats, but both fuse music, visual design and performance into heightened human stories. Colossus found a particularly useful parallel in production and distribution companies whose distinct points of view have helped make bold, emotionally charged storytelling culturally magnetic for younger audiences.
Colossus ECD Travis Robertson said:
“There is a renewed artistic appeal that has been created by the rise of modern production and film distribution companies with a real perspective, A24, Monkeypaw, Neon and others. Many of the themes you see in cinema cross over to opera beautifully. Remove the format and you’re left with many of the same narrative pieces.”
That connection extends through the identity. A crisp grid and oversized, masthead-like titles give each piece of collateral the force of a cinematic poster, while abstract photography and evocative imagery pull individual plot themes forward without flattening them into literal scene-setting.
The visual system works primarily in black and white, punctured by concentrated flashes of neon yellow, green, pink and red. Those spot colours provide a controlled electric charge while preserving the minimal, predominantly duotone character of the work.
Typography supplies much of the identity’s dramatic range. The system leans heavily on James Edmondson’s Forevs family from OH no Type Co., whose wide variety of weights, expressions, glyphs and alternate characters allows the design to bend around the emotional temperature of each performance. The type can roar across a playbill header, shrink to a whisper or contort into more whimsical applications, giving BLO a consistent visual vocabulary without forcing every production into the same costume.
Colossus also created a commemorative 50th-anniversary icon, while leaving BLO’s existing logo largely intact. The result gives the institution a recognisable anniversary marker and a broader identity system designed to continue working after the candles have been blown out.
Boston Lyric Opera director of marketing and sales Alfredo Muñoz said:
“As we approached our 50th Anniversary season, it became clear that Boston Lyric Opera needed a visual identity that could build long-term brand equity and capture the creativity and theatricality that define opera. Colossus understood both the artistic and practical sides of that challenge. They created a look and feel, and a branding system that is operatic, flexible and easy for our internal team to work with across seasons and platforms. They helped us establish a consistent visual framework that unmistakably feels like BLO, while allowing each upcoming production’s unique themes and storytelling to shape the imagery and design. We’re thrilled by the solutions they brought forward and look forward to continuing this exciting collaboration throughout our 50th Anniversary and beyond.”
