Create Not Hate Music Workshops Launched in Partnership with The Elements Music
Mar. 26, 2021
Create Not Hate, the organisation set up by Trevor Robinson OBE to get underrepresented young people into the creative industries, has launched a series of workshops to give the CNH cohort exposure to the world of music for media.
The workshops have been led by The Elements Music, which creates music and sound for the world’s biggest brands, the first workshop gave the young people an introduction to the music for media industry, showed them what sort of career paths exist and inspired them with some of The Elements recent projects.
Participants were also set multiple music briefs according to each participating young person’s experience – a film without sound to score for someone already producing their own music, for example, or a soundless film to compile a playlist for someone more into music discovery.
One of the live briefs involved working on a piece of music for the British Arrow Awards, which took place on March 25. The music accompanies a film for the award ceremony for the ‘Made in Lockdown’ category. The participants were invited to record themselves expressing how they’ve felt about lockdown and the challenges and experiences they’ve faced.
The winning entry was a poem written and performed by 16-year-old, Jaiden Chang. This was made into a piece of music by The Elements and entrants were invited to see the process of the music being produced. The Arrows have also given two participants paid work as runners at the Arrows award ceremony for exposure to the events side, as well as The Elements offering paid work experience to the winning entrant and ongoing mentorship, aligning with Create Not Hate’s mission to create viable work opportunities and experiences for participants.
Leading the initiative at The Elements are Dann Liebermann and Andy Carroll at Elements UK and J Bonilla, who is based in LA.
Create Not Hate plans to run more music workshops as part of a full programme this year. It also has productions in the pipeline, though those involved are still trying to secure funding.
Lisa Lavender, Operations Director at The British Arrows said:
“We were blown away with the idea of collaborating with Create Not Hate when The Elements Music team proposed it to us. Not only are we able to create a little piece of history with our Lockdown awards film but being able to support Create Not Hate in the process dovetails perfectly with our plans for Young Arrows. We too are keen to support underrepresented young people’s ambitions to work in our industry.”
Dann Liebermann, Executive Creative Producer at The Elements Music said:
“I think we're all looking for the meaning and value in the work we do, especially in the last year. The Create Not Hate program speaks straight to the heart of this, so the opportunity to create a meaningful piece of work with one of their young people for the British Arrows, has genuinely been a hugely rewarding experience for us.”
Trevor Robinson OBE, Executive Creative Director & Founder of Quiet Storm & Create Not Hate said:
“It’s so exciting to us that other people are picking up the CNH baton and making practical steps to include people from diverse backgrounds in the creative industries. We’re hoping that with partners like this we can open the floodgates for the incredible talent that’s out there and currently being missed.”
Create Not Hate’s first two music workshops took place online on March 16 and March 23 2021.
