Let's not Forget World Alzheimer's Day!

Sep. 21, 2026

A.L.M.A., a non-profit organization that supports people with Alzheimer’s disease, launched #NoOlvidesRecordar, an initiative that aims to have 21 September, World Alzheimer’s Day, officially incorporated into Google’s global calendar. This campaign uses a paradox to raise awareness of a disease that affects millions of people and their families.

There is something ironic about Alzheimer’s disease: while one of its main manifestations is forgetfulness, those who accompany people who suffer from it make enormous efforts to keep their memories alive.

Today, an organization has decided to bring this paradox to an everyday place: the calendar.

To commemorate the World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21st, A.L.M.A., an organization dedicated to supporting individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and their families, launched a campaign called #NoOlvidesRecordar. The goal of this initiative is to have this date officially recognized in the global calendar on Google’s platform.

The question that sparked the initiative is simple: If we need dates to remember what we do not want to forget, why is not World Alzheimer’s Day in the calendars we use every day?

The proposal is for September 21st to stop being a date known only to some people because it marks the beginning of spring or Student Day, and instead become part of the daily reminders of millions of users around the world, like World Alzheimer’s Day.

A disease that affects the whole family

Talking about Alzheimer’s means talking about much more than just memory loss.

It is about people who start needing help with activities they used to do alone. It is about children who become caregivers. It is about couples who must learn a new way to support each other. It is about grandchildren who seek to preserve family stories. Those who provide care, companionship, and emotional support to individuals living with Alzheimer’s over an extended period also deserve recognition.

For A.L.M.A., raising awareness means more than just talking about the disease. It also means making the entire support network visible.

That is the context in which #NoOlvidesRecordar was born.

The initiative, developed with the Paraguayan agency Oniria\TBWA, uses a simple and everyday tool like Google Calendar to raise awareness: memories can be lost, but there are causes that we should never forget.

Remembering also means being there.

Alzheimer’s disease can be one of the most challenging experiences for a family. It can cause a person to gradually lose memories, have difficulty recognizing those around them, and stop doing the things they used to do every day.

In that context, remembering takes on a different meaning.

Remembering a date can mean remembering that a disease needs research, support, and public policies. It can mean remembering that behind every diagnosis, there is a family. It can also be a reminder that someone needs us to be there.

Therefore, on September 21st, A.L.M.A. suggests something as simple as it is powerful: don't forget to remember.

Perhaps a day on the calendar will not change the reality of those living with Alzheimer’s.

But it can help millions of people remember that this reality exists.
