Mastodon Debuts Deadly Video for "Show Yourself" Directed by Robert Schober of The Uprising Creative

Mar. 17, 2017

Robert Schober (aka (Roboshobo) of The Uprising Creative directs an amusingly moody farce of a video that jives in a strangely perfect manner with Mastodon’s catchy shred-fest “Show Yourself,” off their upcoming album Emperor of Sand.  The clip follows a beleaguered Grim Reaper who can’t catch a break, catching flak from his boss, his wife, and even his supposed victims. After a string of work-related failures, the cubicle drone version of Death can only get his groove back by killing the members of Mastodon.

Schober turns the common clichés of dark and evil metal videos on their head, as our down-on-his-luck Death loses a game of chess to a should-be dying patient, goes from grimly stalking to violent coughing behind another would-be victim, and is reprimanded by his wife in their idyllic, 1950s-style home.

Mastodon and Schober (and actor Brian Posehn, who has a brief cameo as a street vendor) obviously had a blast capturing the pop culture-laden adventure and the doppelganger-deaths leading up to Death’s accidental win. Schober previously collaborated with Mastodon to great effect for the band’s epically trippy “Curl of The Burl” video, which ranked #4 on Paste Magazine’s “Top 50 Videos of the Decade” list.

Robert Schober has worked with everyone from Metallica to Green Day to The Killers to Jennifer Hudson to Devo, and many more. The always-evolving director recently joined the team at The Uprising Creative, a hybrid studio providing full-scale creative, experiential and video production services to the entertainment, brand and lifestyle markets.
