Suspenseful Short Paints Picture of Depravity Bred by Advancing Tech

Space Cowboys director Val0ne (Dimitri Vallein) has released an unsettling animated short this Halloween season, playing into fears around rapid technological advancements.
Rooting a sci-fi narrative in human themes, "New Specimen" questions how evolving technologies could toy with a corrupt individual’s morbid curiosity and desire for power, and how their victim might react when confronted with the knowledge that their universe hides a sinister truth. It has already met with success, earning semi-finalist status for Oscar-qualifying for Best Short Animation at Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival, as well as nominations at Roma Prisma and Stockholm City Film Festivals.
Created largely using Unreal Engine 5, ‘New Specimen’ sees Val0ne embrace dialogue-driven storytelling for the first time, while preserving his artistic vision characterised by 3D animation. Val0ne partnered with Space Cowboys, having previously worked with co-founder Julie Reali and noted an alignment with the company’s innovative approach to creativity empowered by technology.
Val0ne commented:
“The message I want people to take away is the importance of ethical considerations in the face of rapid technological advancements. As we explore new frontiers, we must reflect on the moral implications of our choices. The film encourages viewers to question the balance between innovation and ethics, reminding us that our pursuit of progress should never come at the expense of our humanity.”
