System1: Volkswagen Makes Automotive Advertising History with Maximum 5.9-Star Score

Jul. 16, 2026

Volkswagen's new '50 Years of Pure Passion' campaign has become the first automotive ad ever tested by creative effectiveness platform System1 to achieve its highest-ever 5.9-Star Rating (which predicts long-term brand building potential). This ends Škoda's 'Cake Car' 13-year reign as the category's top-performing ad.

The 60-second film traces five decades of the Golf GTI through the people who have loved it: from a girl watching her father arrive home in a Mk1 in 1976 to first cars, weddings, new families, new homes and lifelong fans. Era-specific home movies, camcorders, gaming and smartphone footage showcase familiar GTI details before revealing the Edition 50 and the electric ID. Polo GTI.

The advert also achieved an exceptional Spike Rating (which predicts short-term sales impact) of 1.50 and a strong Fluency Rating (which measures the strength of branding) of 94. UK automobile adverts average 2.6 Stars, a 1.03 Spike Rating and Fluency of 84. The combined result places '50 Years of Pure Passion' in the top 0.3% of UK car ads tested by System1.

Other car adverts have scored highly on System1’s Test Your Ad platform by tapping into humour and storytelling. In 2022, Volkswagen scored an exceptional 5.1 Star Rating for its advert featuring horses laughing at a man’s failed attempts to reverse his trailer. In the same year, Vauxhall achieved 4.4 Stars with its ‘Little Dads’ creative, showing two young children discussing their family cars in amusingly adult language. Last year, Suzuki scored  4.2 Stars with the story of a man distracted from his everyday life by his fascination with Suzuki’s new electric vehicle.

Andrew Tindall, Chief Growth Officer System1, said:

"Volkswagen has set a new benchmark. '50 Years of Pure Passion' is the highest-scoring automotive ad we've ever tested. Rather than making the car the whole story, Volkswagen makes the GTI the catalyst for life's biggest moments, from first cars and first loves to weddings, homes and families. It escapes the category's sea of sameness while remaining unmistakably Volkswagen. The GTI's distinctive design, combined with a soundtrack that builds momentum and emotion, creates a powerful positive ending that leaves people feeling good about the brand. That's exactly the kind of advertising that builds memory, compounds over time and translates into long-term profit and market share."
