This Year's Vignette Film at the Goteborg Film Festival Takes a Stand for Artistic Freedom

A strict dictator’s warning awaits the audience at the Göteborg Film Festival: "The art of film is a poison that destroys societies." In this year’s vignette film, the audience is urged to beware of hidden agendas – for the sake of society’s safety. The dictator’s message is clear: leave the cinema now or fall victim to the destructive forces of free art.

Pia Lundberg, Artistic Director of the Göteborg Film Festival said:

"The power of film to influence society is at the heart of this year’s theme, Focus: Disobedience, and it is that power which terrifies the dictator in the vignette film. His message is also a reality that filmmakers risk encountering."

The vignette film is a long-standing tradition at the Göteborg Film Festival, setting the tone for each screening. In this year’s vignette film, directed by Lode Kuylenstierna, the audience comes face to face with a dictator. His rhetoric mirrors the threats facing filmmaking in countries where freedom is severely restricted – places where filmmakers are forced to work in secrecy and smuggle their works across borders, often at the expense of their own safety. Behind the films screened at the festival, behind every scene, there may be an act of defiance and a choice between silence and risking everything.

Pia Lundberg, Artistic Director of the Göteborg Film Festival said:

"Filmmakers face threats of violence, imprisonment, or even death. We want to take this opportunity to draw attention to that – and to encourage people to continue engaging with free and defiant art. Every single one of our visitors supports free art simply by watching films at the festival."

Throughout the festival, audiences are encouraged to support free art through the Göteborg Film Fund. The fund aims to strengthen filmmakers in countries and regions facing economic or political challenges. Through this initiative, the fund contributes to a more diverse cultural and media landscape while promoting artistic freedom and freedom of expression.
