To celebrate the holiday season, Studio Jean-Marc Gady has transformed the iconic Montblanc pen into a calligraphy-writing robot

For the past few years, the iconic German brand Montblanc has turned to design workshop Studio Jean-Marc Gady to help create its holiday window displays in its boutiques throughout the world. This year, 108 years after the first Montblanc fountain pen was sold, the workshop has designed an exhibit that weds modern technology with classical holiday charm.
Boutiques in select cities around the world will showcase an intelligent robot, developed by Studio Jean-Marc Gady, which creates a holiday wish list with the help of the iconic Montblanc pen. Only a few centimeters in diameter, the robot moves back and forth hypnotically, enabling the pen to write a text that ultimately forms a captivating image several meters high.
The robot is capable of creating over 170 phrases in 8 different languages and can transform text into a variety of holiday symbols. Each of the enchanting images is composed of hundreds of meters of suggested holiday resolutions, ranging from personal wellness (“live healthier”) to the generous (“I want to buy a house for my parents in the Bahamas”), to the emotional (“I want to fall in love”).
Studio Jean-Marc Gady conceived a variety of holiday images, using calligraphic text:
Snowflake – 1169 m.
Ornaments – 996 m.
Bells – 700 m.
Greeting Card – 716 m.
Gifts – 1174 m.
Stars – 412 m.
Ribbon – 1439 m.
Snowman – 1160 m.
Lanterns – 500 m.
Christmas cracker – 947 m.
The window display, which was unveiled in Barcelona mid-November, will enchant passersby in a number of cities throughout the world, including Hamburg, London, Milan, Dubai, Hong-Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and New York with its unique design.
Emilie André, Creative Director at Studio Jean-Marc Gady, explains:
"This year, we chose to present the Montblanc pen in a pure functional form : in the process of writing. By demonstrating its functionality through the installation, as well as the desire and Art of Writing, we extended the fields as far as possible. The writing robot espouses, in a unique fashion, all of Montblanc’s values: the highest quality of writing for over 100 years, connecting the brand’s heritage to modernity.”
