Viola Davis Ranked No. 1 on AARP’s Movies for Grownups 25 Most Fabulous Gen X Actresses List

AARP’s Movies for Grownups unveils its 25 Most Fabulous Gen X Actresses list, which honors powerhouse female talent who continue to break barriers, command screens, and redefine what it means to be a Gen X actress in Hollywood.

Now, at roughly between the ages of 45 to 61, this generation of Hollywood actresses have not faded from the screen, but have built production companies, developed their own projects, and reinvented themselves behind the camera as directors, producers, and entrepreneurs fighting for equal pay and breaking stereotypes. They are far from slowing down and are doing the most ambitious work of their careers.

With the list below, AARP’s Movies for Grownups salutes the 25 Most Fabulous Gen X Actresses.

Ranking No. 1 is Viola Davis, 61, for whom AARP The Magazine created a special digital cover. Playing the anguished mother in 2008’s Doubt opposite Meryl Streep, Davis earned her first Oscar nomination and launched an extraordinary screen career.

One of six children, Davis grew up rummaging through garbage cans for food and living in condemned, rat-infested apartments. “I grew up in abject poverty,” she told AARP’s Movies for Grownups. “There was no evidence of greatness in my life. So I had to have magic … I had to dare to ask the big, big question: ‘What if, Viola? What if there’s something out there for you?’”

What those years gave her, she said, was resilience. “I have the ability to survive the hard stuff.”

Rounding out the top five are Charlize Theron, 51, Halle Berry, 60, Penelope Cruz, 52, and Drew Berrymore, 51. Joining them are Jessica Chestain, Amy Poehler, Nicole Kidman, Rose Byrne (the youngest to make the list) and more.
