Alzheimer Patients Relive Emotional Memories

Alzheimer Patients Relive Emotional Memories

Apr. 29, 2019

There is no doubt that Alzheimer's is one of the health problems that continues to be an enigma, given the few options that exist for its treatment and the significant impact it has on lives, both of the patients and their caregivers. Which is why creating awareness is important.

To address this issue, Glidden® | PPG Paints recently launched an initiative called "Extremely Durable Moments", which seeks to perpetuate in works of art the importance of the most valuable memories of patients suffering from Alzheimer's. The campaign is born from the memories of three patients, who after identifying a memory they do not want to forget, worked with emerging local artists to create a painting of this memory in their home, where it is always visible for their enjoyment.

"I do not want to forget the birth of my daughter... my mom and my dad". "I do not want to forget my family. My family is the most important thing". "I do not want to forget my time at the university. My years... they were good. And my son". Thus, Juana, María and Marlene, respectively, told their memories that were later perpetuated by the artists Rafael Algarín and Rafael Vega, Jesús "Bubu" Negrón and Grace Montalvo in murals painted on one of the walls of their houses.

As part of the initiative, these works of art became reproductions that the public can buy through www.recuerdosqueduran.com, and the monies raised will be used to support De Frente al Alzheimer Foundation, whose mission is to raise awareness and educate about Alzheimer's, as well as creating an economic fund designed to support low-income patients in Puerto Rico.

Karina Jiménez, Marketing Manager for PPG Puerto Rico, said:

"We wanted to amplify the magic of the color of our products to generate a positive impact in the community. For our team, it has been a great pride and it has filled us with immense satisfaction to know the stories of these three great women and who have allowed us to share them with Puerto Rico and the world to raise awareness about this terrible disease."

On the initiative website, the public will also be able to see the complete stories of Juana, María and Marlene and the process of creating the murals that will make their memories reflected in their homes, where they can see them every day and do cognitive exercises with their family, helping them keep their precious memories for longer.
