Arequipena Turns its Beer Bottles With UV Protection into Tiles

The city of Arequipa, in Peru, has an extremely serious problem due to the decrease in the ozone layer and other geographical factors. Arequipa is one of the cities with the highest radiation levels in the world – a problem that is affecting thousands of citizens, and of which many are not aware. For this reason, Cerveza Arequipeña, part of Backus, together with the NGO Por Un Perú sin Cáncer, have joined forces to face this problem and raise awareness about sun care.

They started from a finding: Arequipeña bottles have high UV-400 protection, which protects the beer from UV rays, so why not use them to protect the most important thing in Arequipa, its people? Under this premise, they took advantage of the cylindrical shape of the bottles to cut them, join them consecutively and create Arequipeña bottle tiles.

The tiles were located in different parts of Arequipa, causing many positive reactions and, most importantly, generating conversation about the problem and prevention of the effects of radiation on the body, and thanks to a QR code, people were able to receive protection tips and even schedule a preventive skin cancer screening near their location, thanks to an alliance with the NGO Por Un Peru sin Cancer.

Diego Devoto, Director of Cerveza Arequipeña said:

"Arequipeña Beer was proudly born in the white city back in 1898, and the most important thing for us has always been, and will always be, our people. For this reason, we feel it relevant to contribute to the awareness of this serious problem, and this time we’re doing it by using our own bottles, which due to their characteristics, have the protection that Arequipeños need to have in their daily activities to protect themselves from solar radiation."

Thanks to Cerveza Arequipeña, more tiles can be created, and continue to protect the most important thing in Arequipa: its people.
