Avocado Toast Won't Stop You from Renting a Home. Taco Bell Spain Wants to Prove It
Aug. 03, 2026
For years, younger generations have been told that buying avocado toast instead of saving money is the reason they cannot afford a home. Despite mounting evidence pointing to rising housing costs and stagnant wages, the idea has become one of the internet's most persistent financial myths.
Now, Taco Bell Spain is turning that conversation on its head.
To celebrate the return of its Guacamole Chicken Burrito, the brand has launched Guacabono, a campaign that will cover up to one year's rent for customers who purchase any Taco Bell menu item containing guacamole and enter the promotion.
According to the latest Youth Emancipation Observatory published by the Spanish Youth Council, only 14.5% of Spaniards aged 16 to 29 currently live independently, meaning that 85.5% still live with their families—the highest figure recorded since the study began. For those who do rent, the average rental cost now represents 98.7% of a young person's average salary, while purchasing a home requires an average down payment of nearly €66,900, equivalent to almost five years of gross income.

Turning an Internet Meme into a Real Benefit
For years, television commentators, entrepreneurs and social media users have repeated the idea that young people cannot afford a home because they spend too much money on small indulgences such as coffee or avocado toast.
The conversation resurfaced globally after controversial remarks suggesting that millennials would be able to purchase homes if they simply stopped buying avocados, turning the fruit into an enduring symbol of generational debate across social media and popular culture.
Rather than ignoring the conversation, Taco Bell Spain and independent creative agency Fuego Camina Conmigo decided to embrace it.
If the internet insists that eating avocado prevents young people from owning—or even renting—a home, Taco Bell wants to prove exactly the opposite.
Beltran Romero de Lecea, Marketing Manager at Taco Bell Spain said:
"The return of our Guacamole Chicken Burrito is one of the moments our fans look forward to most every year. We wanted to celebrate it with something that goes beyond the product itself. Guacabono is our way of giving something meaningful back to the people who enjoy it the most."

Introducing Guacabono
Coinciding with the return of the Guacamole Chicken Burrito, Taco Bell is introducing Guacabono, the brand's first campaign in Spain designed to help pay consumers' rent.
Instead of simply launching another promotional giveaway, the campaign transforms one of the internet's best-known economic memes into a tangible reward with real financial value.
Running from July 22 through August 9, every purchase of any Taco Bell menu item containing guacamole automatically grants consumers access to the promotion. The campaign is presented as "the first avocado that helps pay your rent." Full details and official rules are available through Taco Bell Spain's website and social media channels.
