Cheil Worldwide Inspired To Launch Internship Initiative At 2016 Andy Awards Final Judging
Nov. 25, 2016
Cheil Worldwide is partnering with the ADVERTISING Club of New York's International ANDY Awards on an internship initiative to support two standouts from the show’s Student Competition. It is the first time in the show’s history where the integrated jury were collectively impressed by the magnitude of a student idea and decided to distinguish it as a RESET Winner – the ANDYs professional category for innovation.
The idea - “Stop-It” – is an app designed to assist those suffering at the hands of domestic violence. The students behind the work are Elena Hernandez and Rodrigo Dominguez from Miami Ad School, Madrid. In addition to their Gold ANDY, they were hired as interns by Breno Cotta, ECD, Cheil Madrid, who will support and collaborate with them to make their award-winning idea a reality. Elena and Rodrigo started in their permanent roles on Thursday 3 November.
The initiative is the brainchild of Malcolm Poynton, Global Chief Creative Officer, Cheil Worldwide, who served as a judge at the ANDY Final Judging Session in Seville back in February. For him, Hernandez and Dominguez’s app stood out as groundbreaking technology with real-world implications if cultivated in the proper environment.
Poynton said “Without knowing where the ‘Stop-It’ team came from, I knew that Cheil could help them realise their idea and the ANDYs agreed to work together to find a way to establish this internship. This is a great example of the ANDYs commitment to shaping the future of our business with the brightest talent of the next generation.”
“The ANDYs provide a $10,000 scholarship each year to promising students, but this takes that investment a step further,” said Gina Grillo, President & CEO, The ADVERTISING Club of New York & International ANDY Awards. “I hope this inspires other jurors and agencies to do the same in the years ahead.”
The ANDYs has begun accepting both professional and student entries for the 2017 season.
About The AD Club & ANDY Awards:
Founded in 1964, the ANDYs honor global creativity in advertising, and recognize the contributions of individuals and companies who continually innovate, experiment and inspire with novel approaches to communication. Produced by The ADVERTISING Club of New York, the ANDYs are one of the only not-for-profit award shows in the industry, with proceeds going directly to The Club’s Foundation to fund its education initiatives. The Foundation is committed to supporting and cultivating talent entering our industry. Founded in 1896, The ADVERTISING Club is the premier organization for all advertising and marketing professionals in New York. Administered by The Club’s Chairman of the Board of Directors Carl Fremont, Global Chief Digital Officer at MEC Global, the 2016 ANDY Awards are led by Gina Grillo, President & CEO; Lucy Truglio, Director; and Ariel Blakeman, Manager.
In addition to admiration and respect from their peers, entrants are eligible to win Bronze, Silver and Gold ANDY Awards. ANDY Award winners also compete for the ANDY's highest honor, the GRANDY. In addition to gaining prominence within the industry, the GRANDY winner receives a cash prize of $50,000. All Public Service Gold ANDY winners are eligible for the Richard T. O’Reilly Award (named in memory of the National Director of the Partnership for a Drug-Free America), the title of the best PSA of the year and a donation of $10,000 directly to the charity the winning work was created to promote. The Glenn C. Smith Award and Scholarship, named in honor of a past ANDY Chairman, is given to the best in show student winner; generally an Art Director/Copywriter team. The winner of the Student Competition receives a $10,000 scholarship to further their creative studies. The marketer which exhibits the best example of creative risk and collaboration will be awarded the Bravery Award; past recipients include Volkswagen, Chipotle, Intermarche and REI.
