Kylie Takes On Mysterious New Persona In "Kiss of Life" Promo Directed By Sophie Muller
Nov. 15, 2021
Esteemed director Sophie Muller has collaborated with creative director Theo Adams on a beautifully retro music video for "Kiss of Life" featuring Jessie Ware.
A cast of performers from the Theo Adams Company bring effervescent chaos to a nocturnal scene set in a dimly lit Italian restaurant, where Kylie camps it up incognito in an over-the-top plumed hat, wig and sunglasses. Jessie Ware takes on the persona of restaurant manager, sparring Dynasty-style with Kylie's character as dramatic mini-dramas play are played out by an intriguing cast of characters who could be from a Fellini or Almodovar movie.
Creative Director Theo Adams says of collaborating on the music video with Sophie Muller:
“It all happened quite organically between us both sitting at her kitchen table cackling away coming up with this fever dream of chaos!”
Produced by Chris Murdoch out of PRETTYBIRD UK, the promo was filmed late at night in London's Italian restaurant Ave Mario, with a retro camera and unique performers including London’s nightlife royalty Princess Julia lending a Studio 54 meets 80s Telenovella vibe. The video culminates with a rare music video monologue from Kylie, who reads out her 5* review of the restaurant as she types it up on a typewriter. The official video for Kylie and Jessie Ware "Kiss of Life" is a veritable fashion-filled disco frenzy.
Director Sophie Muller explains how she achieved the distinctive retro 1980’s effect:
“The video was all shot on an 80’s news camera - the ikegami 79D three-tube 1980’s colour portable - at a hair raising speed. And considering the hellishly late night/ early morning hours of the shoot, everyone contributed their finest performances.”
"Kiss of Life" was directed by multiple award-winning director Sophie Muller, who has directed several music videos for Kylie and worked with an illustrious roll call of musicians during a career spanning more than two decades, including Beyonce, Gwen Stefani, Annie Lennox, Kings of Leon, The Kills and Rihanna.
The track was written by Kylie and Jessie Ware, alongside James Ford, Danny Parker and Shungudzo. It follows single "A Second to Midnight" with Years & Years, which was released earlier this month to widespread praise-deemed "dazzling" by NME and a "delightful disco fever dream" by Rolling Stone.
Last month Kylie announced the new "DISCO: Guest List Edition" which will be released on November 12 via BMG. The new version of her hugely successful "DISCO" will feature "Kiss of Life", "A Second to Midnight" alongside another brand-new track titled "Can’t Stop Writing Songs About You", recorded with disco legend Gloria Gaynor. The new version of "DISCO" also features an array of incredible remixes from the original album and "Real Groove (Studio 2054 Remix)"- last year's hit collaboration with Dua Lipa.
