Casa Batllo and HBO Max Awaken Gaudi's Dragon with the First "Previously On" to Fuse Physical And Audiovisual Art

HBO Max and Casa Batlló have turned the traditional rules of entertainment promotion on their head with the launch of a hybrid and transmedia activation: a project that brings together a monumental physical installation in Barcelona and the release of a previously on audiovisual piece fully inspired by the art of stained glass, recreating key scenes from the seasons of “House of the Dragon”.

Coinciding with the premiere of the third season of the HBO Original series on 22 June, Antoni Gaudí’s iconic building is hosting an installation where glass craftsmanship becomes a vehicle to narrate the events of the series. The three monumental contemporary stained-glass windows are not mere decorative elements: they function as a physical and chronological recap designed to visually explain the dramatic evolution of House Targaryen.

Legend has it that, centuries ago, Barcelona lived in fear of a dragon. The master architect Antoni Gaudí immortalised this myth in Casa Batlló, crowning the building with a roof of ceramic scales, which is why the building is known as “La Casa del Drac” (or “The House of the Dragon” in English). Now, on the centenary of Gaudí’s death, the story comes to life thanks to an alliance with HBO Max in the first free limited-edition branded experience at Casa Batlló.

The experience proposes a temporary intervention at Casa Batlló, bringing it closer to the world of Westeros. During these days, visitors will not only contemplate Gaudí’s work, but will also experience sound and lighting effects as part of an exclusive tour.

The climax of this journey can be found in the Attic. Beneath the legendary catenary arches, reminiscent of a dragon’s ribs, three monumental contemporary stained-glass windows have been installed. Illustrated by Valencian artist Ausias Pérez and the design studio T.O.T, and handcrafted by prestigious Catalan master glass artisan David Gibernau, recognised by the Government of Catalonia and with more than 50 years of experience in the world of artistic glass, the pieces are inspired by the aesthetics of Art Nouveau and the modernism of Gaudí’s era, fusing Mediterranean light with the plot of the fantasy saga.

Gibernau commented:

“It has been an honour to participate in the creation of the stained-glass windows inspired by House of the Dragon, conceived to engage in dialogue with a space as iconic as Casa Batlló. The pieces incorporate subtle references to Antoni Gaudí’s aesthetic universe, fusing heritage and fiction in a particularly symbolic encounter on the centenary of his death”.

The three stained-glass windows: the history of Westeros written in glass and fire

The three monumental original works, also translated into the series’ previously on, reflect the fascinating universe of the Targaryen family, the protagonists of “House of the Dragon”, inviting visitors to discover up close a story marked by fire, blood and dragons. Each stained-glass window therefore serves as the canvas for one season of the HBO Max series.

Season 1 stained-glass window

Inspired by Gaudí’s organic language, this first piece revolves around the coveted Iron Throne. Among its intricate coloured details, the most attentive visitors will be able to discover iconic elements such as Rhaenyra’s dagger, the rival crowns of the two factions, Aemond’s mysterious sapphire eye, King Viserys’ golden mask and a petrified dragon egg.

Season 2 stained-glass window

With a notably darker, more dramatic tone and deep contrasts, this piece depicts the outbreak of war. At the centre of the composition is the devastating aerial battle of Rook’s Rest, where the dragons Vhagar and Meleys clashed in the skies.

Season 3 stained-glass window

This work offers a preview of what lies ahead in the new season. The stained-glass window completely abandons straight lines in an interpretation inspired by the Battle of the Gullet, intertwining fire, water, flowers and dragons. The war can no longer be stopped and fire will consume everything.

Local craftsmanship, global impact

The choice of master glass artisan David Gibernau is no coincidence. Trained in the traditional techniques that made Barcelona shine in 1900, Gibernau’s work champions the value of traditional crafts and local know-how in the digital age. The result is an experience that appeals both to lovers of design, art and architecture, and to fans of epic fantasy.

Throughout his career, he has taken part in projects of major technical and cultural relevance, including the development of the glass elements for the star of the Tower of the Virgin Mary at the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, the technical reinterpretation of historic elements of Casa Batlló, the restoration and reproduction of heritage pieces, and the creation of monumental works in fused glass such as the Crist del Fluvià.

The installation will be open to the public for a limited time in the attic of Casa Batlló, offering one of the most unique cultural, leisure and design experiences of the season in Barcelona.
